Belated Merry Christmas!

I don't know about all y'alls, but my Christmas was awesome. I got to spend a lot of time with my family and got good presents.

Related to Japan though, I got the rest of the pieces to my Kimono(so I have a full kimono!!!!), lots of $$(straight to the savings account! I'll post total later), a travel diary(for time in Japan and other places I travel), and I got a Kanji book!!!! I may not have had a WHITE Christmas, but I did have a good one.

I hope all of you guys had a good holiday season whether you celebrated Hanukkah  Kwanzaa, Christmas, or didn't celebrate any holiday! I will post total earnings this weekend. That includes money in my bank account!!

Since we didn't die...

Back to focusing on Japan! I know I haven't made any money in the past few days, but I am currently making headbands for sale. They're these really cute crocheted headbands with a crocheted ornament of your choice to go with it. The reason why I saw ornament of your choice is simply because I have found a way to make them any style my customers want.

I haven't figured out the price yet, but I'm thinking around $5 for just the headband and $.25 for the small flower, $.25 for the bow, and $.50 for the big flower(since it is considerably more work, yarn, and size than the others). Let me know in the comments if you think I should ask more or less for anything.

P.S. I will (hopefully) be starting an ebay/etsy account to sell these to you lovely readers and other interested and supportive people of the internet.

Here's a cat :D Enjoy~

OMG TOMORROW IS 12/21/12!!!

The world isn't going to end. I did my research about it like the little nerd I am and found interesting things about how they predicted it to end.

First off, I should warn you that I am a pretty anti-12/21/12 person. I may joke around that it is supposed to end, but I am just doing that to tease around like the little blogger that I am.

Lets begin!

When the Mayans predicted this apocalypse they predicted that the planet, Nibiru(otherwise known as planet X), was going to crash into the earth. Pretty drastic right? Well, this is false because, the scientists would have known about this for a long time because a planet isn't really that much of a ninja. The moon is clear as day out in our atmosphere and it is about the size of Pluto, so if a planet the size of earth was going to crash into us we would see it better. Plus, N.A.S.A. doesn't have any record of the planet ever existing.

Like the Earth is really failing tomorrow. Come on guys.
And ,yes, I know that this had nothing to do with Japan, so I'll update my earnings and application progress.

No money added to fund today(Christmas is almost here guys!)
Brochure not here yet.
It's bitter cold outside with rain and NO SNOW! Come on Seattle!

True....

If I didn't have school then I would also do this during the week...

My meaning for living.

Hey guys, this post is long overdue. When I found out about the terrible shooting in Connecticut I was saddened. I thought, why do these things happen? Of course that sounds really cliche, but it's true. In 2012 alone, the U.S. has had 16 mass shootings so far. 16.(source) That is 16 too many. But I am talking about this because my high school, like many in the country, has been threatened by someone that they would shoot up our school during the huge Winter Wish Week assembly. I'm serious. A Seattle 'burb school full of rich kids. This has not only scared me, but it made me think about my meaning of life. (Sorry for being so boringly serious, but I promise this is the last serious one for a while!) I realized that I have something to live for that makes me extremely happy. You guessed it, Japan. I am finally sticking with something for more than a year or two! Fo shizzle, I have had the dream of learning Japanese(and to go to Japan) since third grade! So when I found out about the threat I felt unsafe not only because I was afraid of getting shot, but also because I don't want to give up on my dreams.

Is this what popularity feels like?

Thanks for viewing my blog! I feel so accomplished that I have gotten 14 views in a little more than a day! *victory dance*

Anyways, I have some news. It isn't that serious because it isn't set in stone, but I might have a summer job this year even though it is only December! I know that I probably shouldn't be celebrating yet because it isn't on paper yet, but I just can't help myself!

Being a math geek, I like to crunch numbers in my head whenever I am spacing out. For example, when I was calculating how I would possibly ever raise $15k. I found out that Washington state law says that for a minor at age 14, I can work for minimum age with a parent consent. This is great because if you multiply $9.19(WA min. wage) per hour by a minimal amount of hours spent working in a day(about 6-7 hours at least), and multiply it by the minimal amount of work days during my summer break(40 weekdays) then you get a grand total of  $2,573.2. And that is before taxes.

Thankfully, I'm not doomed. I am 100% positive that I will easily pay for the tuition of the AFS cultural exchange from the help of my friends and family.

First world problems...

So I sent in a request for a catalog from AFS yesterday. I am having the normal anticipation problems that come from waiting for a package/letter to come. It also doesn't help that I also have pre-Christmas jitters of anticipation. I guess that means that my anticipation levels are OVER 9000!!!! (see what I did there? heehee)

Welcome one and all

Welcome to my blog.

My name is Emma Tibbits and I am an aspiring exchange student. When I say this I mean that I am currently raising money and preparing myself for an exchange trip to Japan my junior year of high school. I have only just started raising my tuition, but through the support of my family and friends I have $104. That may not seem like a lot of money compared to how much I need, but for a fourteen-year-old that's a lot of money.

Why are you going on an exchange program?
Well, when I was in 3rd grade I discovered the vast culture of Japan and fell in love. From the food to the geography; I love it all. For months after the discovery of my new interest I kept checking out book after book from the library. I even bought an 8 disk set of language learning CD's. Since then, my interest has grown into hours of research. I researched dozens of cultural exchange opportunities ranging from a mere two weeks of travel, to a whole year of immersion. There are so many different organizations and I decided on AFS (AFS info).

How much do you need to raise?
The tuition for the year long trip is $13,200. However, if I add the $1,000 for my touristy expenses plus the cost of a ticket to the "gateway city" and passport/student visa costs it adds up to about $15,270. Call me crazy, but I would rather spend a year of intense study in Japan than buy a new car.

How are you fundraising the money and how much do you have so far?
As I said earlier, I have approx. $104 which means I have $15,196 left. I have been doing chores for my family and neighbors. I make bracelets, scarves, and headbands for sale. I am also going to get a job over the two summers before my trip to hopefully earn half of my tuition.

As far as my language progress goes, I currently am using at least 5 different language books, flashcards, and    many other internet tools. I am mainly using the website http://japaneseclass.jp/ to learn new Kanji and vocabulary. It is the best website I have used so far.
